Frequently Asked Questions for Advisors

This section is designed to help advisors:

1) Understand their role at UCMUN

2) Learn more about the policies in place at UCMUN

3) Prepare their delegates for an exceptional conference

Check-in:

1) How does the check-in process work?

When you arrive at the conference, you will be directed to the check-in desk. This allows us to be sure that your group is present and that you have all of the materials and information we need to give you.

2) May a delegate or club president check in for me?

Unfortunately, UCMUN cannot allow a student to check-in in place of an advisor. Communicating directly with the advisors is essential to our staff during the check-in process. It will also help you become familiar with the staff, who will be able to answer any questions that you may have.

3) When is check-in?

You may sign your delegations in upon arrival. The desk will be set up the first day of the conference.

Advisor-delegate Relations:

1) To what degree am I responsible for my delegates?

As chaperones, faculty advisors take the place of the parent for the duration of the conference. The staff at UCMUN understands and appreciates the gravity of such a role, and will be sure to inform you of any incidents involving one of your students. Please familiarize yourself with the special needs of your students prior to the conference and if there is anything that the staff should know, please do not hesitate to inform them.

2) Am I allowed to sit in on committee sessions?

Faculty advisors may view committee sessions. However, it is requested that advisors do limit their time in any one committee so as not to become a distraction for delegates. Always striving to provide an educational experience, the staff recognizes that much learning occurs when unhindered by observation, and respectfully request your assistance in this matter.

Additionally, Directors will not permit communication between advisors and delegates during committee sessions, as such communication can provide an undue advantage and disrupt the session. If you wish to discuss a delegate's performance or position, please wait until the next session break. Emergencies and matters of safety are the exception to this rule; do not hesitate to speak quietly with a delegate in such a circumstance.

3) Our delegates receive a grade base upon their performance; does UCMUN provide any feedback regarding this?

Yes! UCMUN's staff works tirelessly to make the entire experience more enjoyable for both delegates and faculty advisors. As a result, directors provide "wine lists" of the top delegates in each committee session. These lists are used in determining award recipients and will be provided to faculty advisors.

Advisor-staff Relations:

1) If there is an issue, with whom should I speak?

Matters of registration should be brought to the attention of Secretary-General William Maurer, who can be reached at UConnModelUN@gmail.com while other matters should be directed to Chief of External Relations Linda Cody, who can be reached at Linda.cody@gmail.com.

During the conference, the entire staff is busy ensuring the comfort and safety of our guests. As a result, all inquiries, regardless of subject, may be brought to Chief of External Relations Linda Cody. It will be her pleasure to serve you throughout the conference.

2) If I know a staff member, may I speak with them?

While it is appropriate for staff members and advisors with previous relationships to communicate during the conference, staff members are quite busy throughout the entirety of the conference and will not likely be able to remain engaged in conversation. We sincerely apologize in advance for any inconvenience.

What to Expect:

1) What do my duties as a faculty advisor entail?

There will be a faculty advisor guide posted in the Conference section of this website closer to the conference date. This will be a great help in understanding specifically what is asked of you as an advisor.

2) Will there be any room for me to do work during the conference?

Faculty advisors are by their very nature busy people. The staff recognizes this and has devoted a meeting room to advisors. This room will be for advisors, and no delegates will be permitted inside. The meeting space will serve as an area in which to do work or to socialize with other advisors.

3) Will I have to attend any meetings?

Unfortunately, meetings will be required of advisors. These meetings will take place in the faculty advisor room and you will be provided with a schedule in the faculty advisor guide. These meetings will be as concise as possible and will be used to convey pertinent information about the schedule and procedures of the conference.
